Book 3 in the Sisters Of The Quilt series, When The Soul Mends begins two years after Hannah Lapp left behind her Old Order Amish life in Owls’ Perch, to begin a new life as an Englischer. Two years of heartbreak, recovery, and eventual fulfillment as a nursing student, girlfriend, and caregiver to two precious children. Life for Hannah was finally growing happy again… and then the call.

An anguished plea from her distraught and confused sister Sarah to come home, leaves Hannah with few choices. A fire back home in Owls’ Perch has left one friend dead, another badly burned. Disinclined as she is, to return to the one place that holds such pain, rejection and fear for her, Hannah reluctantly agrees. What she finds when she returns, is alarming to say the least. Her younger sister is unwell; obsessed with the product of a long held secret, Sarah threatens more fires and self-destruction.

Enter Paul Waddell, Plain Mennonite, Amish community social worker, and ex-fiancĂ©. Paul is also, Hannah’s only hope for getting her sister the help that she so desperately needs. Fighting her father, her boyfriend Martin, and her fight-or-flight instincts, Hannah is determined to ensure her sister’s care.

Making the ultimate sacrifice, Hannah commutes back and forth between her new home in the Englischer world and the home she left behind in Owl’s Perch. While Martin grows less and less inclined to understand Hannah’s need to stay in touch with her Amish family and friends, Paul pushes Hannah to open up about the past and forgive him for his part in the pain the caused her to run away. Confused by her returning affection for the Amish life and puzzled by the intense pull that remains between Paul and her, Hannah must make a decision that will change all their lives forever.

A heartfelt and endearing read, When the Soul Mends is a story of healing and forgiveness. Woodsmall’s character development leaves nothing to be desired and her honest portrayal of a woman’s world in upheaval is stirring. Read as the third in the series or alone, When The Soul Mends is a beautiful and suspenseful novel.
