Lady in Waiting by Susan Meissner

Lady in Waiting is a novel about coming to terms with the choices we make either consciously or by omission. Told in two parallel stories, one in Upper West Side, Manhattan today and one beginning in Sudeley Castle, Gloucestershire, England, 1548.

When Jane Lindsay’s husband leave’s her with no warning or explanation other than he felt they needed a break, Jane is left frightened and confused. Struggling to find answers amidst the critical questioning of her parents and the advice of her friends and sister, she turns to her work in an antique store for escape. And then she finds the ring. Hidden in the binding of a very old prayer book is a beautiful ring inscribed with her very name; Jane.

Lady Jane Grey was a young aristocrat born to “privilege”, title, and all that entailed. Fourth in line to the crown, Lady Jane was raised a pawn in her family’s bid for power. With Lucy her seamstress and trusted friend by her side, Lady Jane experiences both love and heartache in her short life. Only Lucy knows the true heart of Lady Jane, and caries her dearest secrets to the grave.

Although these two main characters could hardly be more unlike, their plight to self-discovery is very much the same. Both feel they are victims of their circumstances, unable to control the outcomes of their futures, waiting on the will of others. Yet both discover the power and strength within us all to choose.

I received this book free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group as part of their BloggingForBooks program. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own.
