Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

I wanted to fall in love with this book, but alas, it was not to be. There was so much unnecessary crudity, I realize, to set the tone of the gritty times and life on the rail. And yet there was no sense of the romantic, or true character development, to create a gripping story. While I have not seen the movie yet, I am told it is very good (by several who have not read the book). This may be one of the rare instances when the movie is actually better than the novel.
